LO3: Following Codes & Conventions

Codes and Conventions

To follow hip hop video conventions we used common angles and effects we studied in pre-production. Effects included: Ghost effect, Line tracking, Vortex transition, fast cuts, Adapted giphs. ect. Following common codes and conventions will attract my target audience and promote the artist in the desired way. We used shot types such as: Medium close ups, Full shots, Close ups. Common angles we saw in other Hip-hop videos were used like: Dutch angle and Low angle.

Example 1

To show the audience that the artist is XAK from the start, we introduced him through B-roll and close ups. This establishing shot starts the video off slow to match the slow instrumental at the start. The clip was slow down to mimic the classic style. An example of this is the 88Glam - Bali video. Prior to the clip we showed the graphics to showcase the artist and the song name.

Example 2

The video did not have a narrative however other hip-hop videos alike have subliminal messages throughout. We felt like adding the butterfly in the psychedelic sequence showed XAK's career blossoming since this was his first video and a milestone. This rapid change of images to create a twisted reality was inspired by Travis Scott's - Butterfly effect. Similar colour  pallets are used such as the purples and oranges as a tribute.

Example 3

This low angle connotes power and importance, this is a key shot within the video because hip-hop conventions are all about ideal self and showing self worth. I like this shot because it clearly shows the artists and his costume. Since these are desirable garments the audience will recognise. An example of this is YBN Nahmir's video above.

Example 4

The genre has a very materialistic image. We felt including the Mercedes it added a classic tribute to the hip hop genre. The angle in this shot is a dutch angle. This is my favourite shot from the music video because it is composed perfectly to show the artist in full and the car.  This screen shot from Travis Scott's - beibs in the trap. Video reflects the same conventions our video does.
